Over the course of almost four decades, I have offered my time and energies to many Y-Camp programs. In my years as kitchen staff, counseling staff, program staff, and friend I’ve had the pleasure of participating in, and contributing to, many campfires, chapels, vespers, and devotions. I’m totally captivated by the great and wonder-filled opportunities we have to impact children’s lives for God. It’s an amazing thing when you move Him out of the Sunday school atmosphere for a time in order to give children an opportunity to see and experience God and His many wonders in the simple and natural setting of resident camping.

Music, poetry, stories, and the Bible are the elements that good spiritual programs are built upon. I used to scrounge through my local library, music shops, and book stores, to glean nuggets of wise words to build a good faith-filled spiritual experience. Often, campers, fellow staff members, and friends would send me writings and songs to share with my campers. I filled notebooks with pieces that fit so beautifully into a camp setting - works that inspired all of us as we set about the task of inspiring others. This book is a culmination of that labor and devotion - a spiritual toolkit for planning and sharing the awe and love I have for camp and my desire to inspire campers and staff with God’s amazing words and vision.

Heart-Songs
4/25/12

It was trip that took you everywhere and nowhere in particular. A few notes and you were on the dance floor. A few more and you were in your first car picking up friends for a trip to the beach. And at the end of the week, after you dropped ‘school’ at the front door you cranked up a favorite song and headed out for hamburgers and a Friday night cruise on the boulevard. Your ears connected to your hearts-call all in one simple riff. Bet you can relate. Whatever language we speak or slang we use or dialect we choose, music is the same across the board. Music moves us with its own beat and rhythm. It has its own style and expression and no matter the message, music speaks. It connects. It directs. It soothes. We share the deepest parts of our soul when we join together in song. Music is a universal conversation that charges our emotions with notes and harmony and divine sound. This soul-language offers us the mystery and wonder that keeps us talking, singing, and relating to something greater than ourselves. Dust off that guitar, crank up the radio or an old record player, or plug the Ipod into some speakers and get going. Music, like the sea, is calling!
